I am a multi-passionate, feminist creative marketer who helps values driven business make money while making the world a better place. As an accomplished brand strategist, web designer and published author, I know a thing or twenty about helping businesses grow their online presence, wealth and impact in the world AND confidently take up space online.

If you’ve ever scrolled past a brand and thought “I need to know more about them”…that’s bold branding doing exactly what it’s supposed to do.
But here’s what most people get wrong about it.
Bold branding isn’t about being the most colourful brand in the room. It’s not about the chunkiest font, the most chaotic palette, or the loudest personality.
It’s about being the most unmistakably, unapologetically you and trusting that the right people will feel it immediately.
Hey! I’m Emily, brand strategist and visual identity designer behind Unbuttoned Brands. I specialize in bold, inclusive branding for values-driven service providers—coaches, therapists, creatives, and entrepreneurs who are done playing small and ready for a brand that actually feels like them.
So let’s break down what bold branding actually means, what it looks like in practice, and how to know if your brand is bold or just busy.
Here’s the thing about bold branding: It’s the decision to stop trying to appeal to everyone and start resonating deeply with the right people.
It’s choosing clarity over comfort.
A lot of service providers—especially healers, coaches and therapists—hold back when it comes to their branding. They pick safe, neutral colours. They write vague copy. They try to look “professional” in a way that ends up feeling like…everyone else.
And then they wonder why their website isn’t converting. Why people aren’t reaching out. Why marketing feels like a constant uphill battle.
Sound familiar?
That’s not a marketing problem. That’s a branding problem.
Bold branding fixes that by giving your brand a clear, confident point of view so that the people you’re meant to serve recognize you immediately.
Bold branding is the intentional strategy of building a brand identity that is:
This is what a strong brand identity package does. It doesn’t just make you look good. It makes you feel recognized by the right people, at the right time.
I want to address something because it comes up all the time.
Bold ≠loud. Bold ≠maximalist. Bold ≠bright and colourful.
(Although it absolutely can be all of those things!)
Bold branding is about conviction, not volume.
Here’s what I mean:
| Loud Branding | Bold Branding |
|---|---|
| Trying to stand out for the sake of it | Standing out because you know who you are |
| Lots of colour, no strategy | Colour choices that mean something |
| Following every trend | A timeless point of view |
| Shocking or attention-grabbing | Magnetic and recognizable |
| Makes people look | Makes the right people stay |
A therapist can have bold branding that feels warm, soft, and deeply intentional. A business coach can have bold branding that’s fun and bright and completely irreverent.
Bold branding looks different for every brand…because that’s literally the point.
When I work with clients on brand strategy and visual identity, we go deep before we ever talk about colours or fonts. Because the boldness has to come from the inside out.
Here’s what creates truly bold branding:
Your brand should have something to say. Not just “I help people.” Not “I offer transformational coaching.” Something that makes someone stop scrolling and think, “yes, that’s exactly what I’ve been looking for.”
This is your brand voice. And it lives in your strategy before it ever lives in your copy.
This is where fun branding, bright branding, and colourful branding come into play—when it’s done intentionally.
Your colours, fonts, and overall aesthetic should feel like an extension of you. Not a template you bought in 2019. And definitely not what looked good on your competitor’s site.
As a brand identity designer, this is one of my favourite parts of the process! Taking someone’s energy and translating it into a visual identity that makes them go “that’s SO me.”
This one’s non-negotiable for me.
Inclusive branding means your brand is designed to welcome the people you actually want to serve—not just a narrow, default version of them.
It shows up in your language, your imagery, your colour choices, your accessibility. It’s the difference between a brand that says “everyone’s welcome here” and one that shows it.
For coaches, therapists, and entrepreneurs who serve diverse communities, inclusive branding isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s part of your strategy.
Bold branding isn’t just about one great Instagram post or a stunning website header.
It’s about the feeling someone gets every time they interact with your brand.
Whether it’s your email newsletter, your discovery call, your content, or your pricing page…everything should feel cohesive. That consistency is what builds trust. And trust is what converts browsers into buyers.
Honestly? Most service providers who’ve been in business for more than a year.
But it’s especially relevant if you’re:
This is exactly what I do through my brand design services and brand strategy service.
Branding for coaches and therapist branding are some of my favourite projects because these are people who do deeply meaningful work and they deserve a brand that honours that!
Not sure if this applies to you? Here are some honest signs it might be time for a bolder brand:
If you nodded at more than two of those, you’re not alone…and it’s fixable.
Let me paint you a picture.
Imagine landing on a brand’s website and immediately thinking: I don’t know how, but this person gets me.
The colours feel alive. The copy sounds like a real human. The vibe is specific in a way that makes you feel like this offer was made for you. You didn’t even have to read their whole About page to feel like you already know and trust them.
That’s bold branding working.
It’s not accidental. It’s the result of strategy, intention, and a brand identity designer who knows how to translate who you are into something visual, verbal, and visceral.
As a brand strategist in Canada working with clients across North America and beyond, I’ve seen what happens when service providers finally get this right. They stop chasing clients. The right people find them and they come already warm, already trusting, already excited.
That’s the power of being unmistakably, unapologetically you.
Not at all. Bold branding is about having a clear, confident point of view, not a specific colour palette. A brand can be bold in black and white, muted tones, or soft pastels. What matters is that the visual identity feels intentional and distinctly yours.
Absolutely yes. Boldness isn’t about being loud or extroverted. Some of the most powerful brands I’ve built are quiet, warm, and deeply considered. If your brand has conviction and clarity, it’s bold.
Yes, and it’s especially powerful for these professions. Therapist branding and branding for coaches works best when it feels like an honest extension of who you are and the experience you offer. That’s bold branding.
A logo is one element of your brand identity. Bold branding is a whole system—strategy, messaging, visuals, voice, and consistency across every touchpoint. It’s the difference between a pretty face and a full, memorable personality.
Start with strategy before aesthetics. Understand who you are, who you serve, and what makes you different. Then work with a brand identity designer who can translate that into a cohesive visual identity. You can explore my brand identity services or take the Brand Vibe Quiz to get some clarity first.
If you’ve been playing it safe with your brand or if you’ve been trying to make something work that just… doesn’t…this is your sign to do something different!
Bold branding is available to you.
Not because you need to be the loudest.
But because you deserve a brand that reflects the real depth, specificity, and you-ness of the work you do.
When your brand is rooted in strategy and brought to life with intentional design, marketing stops feeling like a performance and starts feeling like an extension of who you are.
And that’s when it actually works.
I’d love to help you get there. Explore my brand design services or get in touch to start the conversation.
And hey—before you go…
