I am a multi-passionate, feminist creative marketer who helps values driven business make money while making the world a better place. As an accomplished brand strategist, web designer and published author, I know a thing or twenty about helping businesses grow their online presence, wealth and impact in the world AND confidently take up space online.

You know you need to do something about your brand.
Maybe you’ve known for a while. Maybe it’s been quietly nagging at you every time you send someone to your website, every time you introduce yourself at a networking event, every time you look at your Instagram grid and feel that familiar low-grade cringe.
Your brand doesn’t feel like you anymore. Or maybe it never really did.
But every time you sit down to actually do something about it, you hit a wall. There are so many options. So many opinions. So many people telling you what you need…a logo refresh, a new website, a content strategy, a complete rebrand. And you end up more confused than when you started, so you close the tab and tell yourself you’ll figure it out later.
Sound familiar?
I’m Emily, brand strategist and brand identity designer behind Unbuttoned Brands. I help values-driven service providers build bold, aligned brands that feel like a natural extension of who they already are.
And one of the most common things I hear from people before we work together is: I don’t even know where to start.
So that’s exactly what this post is about. Where to actually start with brand identity services, and how to know what you need, when you need it, and what to do first.
If you’d rather just take a quick quiz to figure out where your brand is right now, the Brand Vibe Quiz is a great place to start.
Before we talk about where to start, it helps to understand what brand identity actually includes , because it’s more than most people think.
Your brand identity is the visual and verbal expression of your brand. It’s the collection of elements that work together to communicate who you are, what you stand for, and what it feels like to work with you.
That includes:
All of these elements should work together to create a consistent, cohesive impression…one that communicates your energy before you’ve said a single word.
When they don’t work together? When your fonts feel formal but your voice is casual, or your colours feel cold but your work is deeply warm? People feel that disconnect, even if they can’t name it. And it quietly erodes the trust your brand is supposed to be building.
Here it is: they start with the visuals.
They hire a designer to make a new logo. Or they buy a Canva template. Or they spend a weekend redesigning their website. And the result looks better than what they had before, but something still feels off.
That’s because brand identity design without brand strategy is just decoration.
It might be pretty decoration. But it’s not doing the job it’s supposed to do: communicating who you are, attracting the right people, and making your business feel like you.
Strategy is the foundation. Identity is the expression of that foundation.
When you build your visual identity on top of a solid brand strategy—when your colours, fonts, and design elements are chosen because they accurately reflect your values, your personality, and your ideal client—everything clicks into place. Your brand doesn’t just look good. It works.
If you want to understand exactly how strategy and identity fit together, my post on brand strategy vs marketing strategy is a great place to dig deeper.
Before you invest in anything, get clear on what’s actually going on with your brand. Ask yourself:
Your answers will tell you a lot about what’s actually missing. Sometimes the problem is purely visual — an outdated logo, an inconsistent colour palette, a website that doesn’t reflect your current positioning. But more often, the problem is deeper: unclear messaging, an undefined ideal client, a brand that was never built on solid strategic ground in the first place.
Knowing which situation you’re in will help you figure out what kind of support you actually need.
Not sure where your brand stands? Take the Brand Vibe Quiz…it’ll give you a clearer picture of your brand’s current vibe and where there’s room to grow.
Not everyone who needs brand identity services needs to start from scratch. Sometimes a targeted refresh…updated colours, new typography, a refined logo…is enough to bring your brand current without overhauling everything.
But sometimes, the foundation itself needs work. If your brand was never built on a clear strategy, if you’ve significantly pivoted your business, or if your current brand belongs to a version of you that no longer exists, a refresh won’t cut it. You need to rebrand.
Here’s a rough guide:
A brand refresh might be right for you if:
A full rebrand might be right for you if:
If you’re not sure which category you’re in, let’s talk it through. Sometimes it takes an outside perspective to see it clearly.
If you’ve determined that you need more than a refresh (that the foundation itself needs work) this is where to start.
Brand strategy work involves getting clear on:
This work takes time and honest reflection. It’s not glamorous. There’s no mood board involved. But it’s the most important thing you can do before you invest in design…because when it’s done well, every design decision that follows becomes clearer and more intentional.
Not all brand identity services are created equal.
Some designers are primarily visual…they’ll take your direction and execute it beautifully, but the strategic thinking is up to you. That’s fine if you already have rock-solid strategy. But if you’re still figuring out your positioning, your voice, or your ideal client, a purely visual approach is going to leave you in the same place you started, just with prettier assets.
Look for a brand identity designer who leads with strategy…who asks about your values before they ask about your colour preferences, who wants to understand your ideal client before they open a single design file.
The best brand identity services combine strategy and design into one cohesive process, so the visuals that emerge are genuinely rooted in who you are.
If you’ve never invested in professional brand identity services before, you might be wondering what the process actually looks like and what you walk away with.
Every designer works differently, but a comprehensive brand identity package typically includes:
Brand strategy foundation — your values, personality, voice, ideal client profile, and differentiators, documented in a way you can reference and build on.
Logo suite — a primary logo plus variations for different uses (horizontal, stacked, icon only, etc.).
Colour palette — a specific set of colours with exact codes so your brand is consistent everywhere.
Typography — a defined set of fonts for headings, body copy, and accents.
Brand style guide — a document that pulls everything together so you (and anyone who works with you) knows exactly how to use your brand elements
Some packages also include website design, brand photography direction, social media templates, or launch support, depending on the designer and the scope of the project.
What you’re really investing in isn’t just the deliverables. It’s the clarity. The confidence. The ability to show up in your business knowing that your brand is doing its job…representing who you actually are and working hard to attract the right people.
Still not sure if now is the right time? Here are some signs that you’re ready:
If you’re nodding at most of these? You’re ready. Not after you get more clients. Not after you make more money. Now.
You don’t earn the brand after the success. The brand helps you get there.
If you’ve been putting this off because you didn’t know where to begin…now you know.
Start with clarity. Start with strategy. Start with an honest look at where your brand is and where it needs to go.
And when you’re ready for support from a brand identity designer who leads with strategy, gets nuance, and builds brands that are genuinely, unmistakably you — I’d love to talk.
